Passing the TOEFL does not necessarily require extreme fluency in the English language. First of all, the TOEFL is an assessment of the ability to read, write, speak, and understand English in academic situations rather than a test of fully functional language skills. It is possible to succeed on this exam with something less than near-native proficiency. Secondly, there is no universal passing standard with respect to the TOEFL; each institution has its own minimum. Ivy League schools such as Harvard, Cornell, and Yale require a 100, but even this level is only classified as "good" on a scale that ranges from "extremely limited" (0-31) to "expert" (118-120). In other words, 100 is a manageable target score. Furthermore, many selective schools and programs will accept students with merely "competent" TOEFL scores, which are defined as anything between 60 and 93. These institutions include Northeastern University (92 for undergraduate students), the University of Southern California (90 for graduate students), Stanford University (89 for graduate engineering students), and Boston University (84 for undergraduates).
The success of Manhattan Review's TOEFL preparation services has been demonstrated by the academic and professional accomplishments of our past students. Manhattan Review's TOEFL clients have been accepted to many of the top undergraduate and graduate programs in the world, including the London School of Economics, the University of Oxford, Harvard University, Dartmouth College, Princeton University, and Trinity College Dublin. Rehema B., originally from Luanda, Angola, has been a TOEFL prep tutor since 2005. She completed bachelors and master's degrees in chemistry at Michigan State University and the University of Indiana. With the help of a language tutor, she was able to score a 118 on the TOEFL when she applied to college. In addition to her TOEFL tutoring, she works for a chemical manufacturing company based in Dublin.
Rehema's African origin, American education, and European professional experience create the ideal profile for a TOEFL tutor. A recent comment on her student evaluations summarized her appeal to TOEFL students: "Rehema has excelled in the English language, university studies in America, and the corporate world in Dublin. She has all of the legitimacy that any TOEFL student needs." Rehema stays busy in her free time with activities such as running, boxing, and keeping up with the latest African pop music.
